Essay / Government restriction of free will depicted in Kurt...
Many books, novels, and stories have been written about the American government and how it runs the country. Some of these books are laudatory and others very critical. Kurt Vonnegut is an author who does both simultaneously. Kurt Vonnegut's "2BR02B", "Welcome to the Monkey House", and "Harrison Bergeron" depict Vonnegut's vision of the future through the central theme of a supreme government that restricts free will. Each of these stories contains excellent examples of this theme, and he shows his vision for the future of the United States through them in their entirety. “Harrison Bergeron” is a great example of a story that depicts government dictation and lack of free will. In this story, equality is at the center of life. The government formulated the disabilities so that everyone is equal, regardless of their talent. This restriction of free will is the main theme of the short story, and Vonnegut discusses it in detail. "Such methods of control include mental disability radios in the ears that emit terrible sounds to interrupt and control thought, masks that hide exceptionally attractive faces and clothing that does the same for bodies, and weights that physically strong people carry at all times, like handicaps for physically strong people horses. (Reed). Most people mentioned in the book own a few of them, with the exception of Harrison Bergeron, who owns them all, plus a few others. Harrison is so gifted that the government takes him from his family to keep him from the public "Harrison... is so exceptionally gifted physically, artistically and mentally that the men of the HG (Handicapper General) come to take him away. Harrison escapes ..[and] gets rid of his physical handicaps..." (Reed). The act of total control by the government...... middle of paper ......48b42@sessionmgr10&bdata=JnNpdGU9bHJjLWxpdmU%3d#db=lfh&AN=MOL9830001686>.Votteler, Thomas. “Kurt Vonnegut (1922- ). » Online literary criticism.
