  • Essay / The Chief Operating Officer Role - 843

THE POSITIONThe Chief Operating Officer (COO) RoleThe departments that will be brought together under the new COO position essentially give the new role control of all aspects of planning operations, inbound materials and logistics, before production engineering, production, quality, outbound logistics and customer service. Additionally, the role will have a Continuous Improvement (CI) Manager/Function reporting to them, in order to internalize/integrate CI processes into this part of the business. The new role of COO reports to the CEO. The interface points between this organizational structure and the rest of the organization are: Sales: with regard to the S&OP process, the specification of customer requirements for the product and also the ordering of formant/customer service. Advanced product engineering: with respect to the introduction of new products or substantial changes to existing products as they affect manufacturing operationsFinance: with respect to all aspects of Volgren's planning/budgeting and performance reporting daily operational reports (to enable finance to perform a weekly and monthly analysis of actual operations versus budget). )Job RequirementsThe nature of the role therefore requires that the incumbent possess the following attributes or abilities: Must be a people manager. The role requires people to achieve its objectives, due to its breadth of functional scope as well as managing multiple sites in interstate locations (rather than being hands-on and 'managing on the go'), eg). Must understand the full scope of a manufacturing supply chain – don't just be an "Operations" person focused on the factory, or for that matter, a "Logistics" person who doesn't ... middle of paper..... .blem solve, etc. They must demonstrate strong capabilities in people management, recruitment and performance management, change leadership, etc. Finally, this person must be able to demonstrate business management abilities; this is essentially a sales or us perspective, indicating that they will have the skills necessary to provide sales leadership for a company as a whole. Ideally, they should demonstrate the ability to qualify in a short to medium time frame to be a candidate for the CEO position at Volgren (as it will be at that time). Industry Experience Applicants must come from the manufacturing industry. They must have worked in fairly large-scale businesses, in order to have sophisticated personal management skills and an understanding of the business system. However, they should not be bureaucratic in style or dependent on large support networks..
