Essay / Social Judgment Theory and Social Judgment Theory
Social Judgment Theory (SJT), also known as Social Judgment Involvement, is "messages and judgments that arise during perception and evaluating each new idea by comparing it to the current point of view and placing it.” on the attitude scale in the mind” (Griffin 2009, p.183). Social judgment theory can be evaluated according to three criteria: predictive power, explanatory power and testability. Social judgment theory is an elegant conception of the persuasion process. Social judgment theory is a credible theory that can be predicted, explanatory, and tested. SJT is based on things we think about that should or could have happened. This theory explains how people judge received messages. Individuals accept or reject the message given to them to see where the attitude outcome will fall on the latitude scale. There are three latitude scales on which the idea can be evaluated: latitude of acceptance, latitude of rejection, and latitude of non-commitment. “The latitude of acceptance is what ideas people consider reasonable or worthy of consideration. The latitude of rejection is the opposite idea of the latitude of acceptance. These are the ideas that people consider unreasonable or objectionable. The latitude of non-engagement corresponds to ideas that people consider neither acceptable nor objectionable” (Griffin 2009, p. 185). The latitude scale leads to a two-step persuasion process. The first step is for individuals to hear or read a message and determine where the message fits in their location. The second stage involves individuals adapting to a particular attitude, either toward the message received or away from it. For example Ned's view on stealing, "stealing is dangerous because fanatics are willing to die for their cause" (G...... middle of paper ......f the table where l Sherif's son's attitude on the latitude scale falls on the rejection side that he is sure that SJT definitely assessed all three criteria: predictive power, explanatory power, and testability SJT was a reliable theory. and credible that was predicted, explained and tested based on real examples This theory was a good theory that tested people's attitude towards things that were thought about and things that were done physically. judge things in their minds and on sight, SJT is used every day even if we don't recognize it or realize that others are doing it. Everyone will send a message that someone is being judged by their. gaze or by what is going on in one's mind The latitude scale helps people understand where the attitudes of others lie. someone's opinion.
