The author/speaker's tone is shown as sympathetic towards his brother Sonny, who has a drug addiction. The speaker seems to understand Sonny's problems and tries to help him throughout the short story. At the beginning of the short story he states: "...I looked at it in the swinging lights of the subway car, and in the faces and bodies of the people. people, and in front of my own face, trapped in the darkness that roared outside…” (first page). In the short story it also states: “And I didn't write to Sonny or send him anything for a long time. When I finally did, it was right after my little girl died…” (page six). These quotes help to bring out the fact that the speaker has sympathy for his younger brother. The speaker's tone is described as sympathetic. The way he describes his surroundings shows the pain he feels for his brother. For example, he says he feels trapped. Throughout the story, the speaker continues to feel this way. When he was teaching his algebra class, he feared that his students would end up like his brother Sonny. The speaker constantly wondered whether or not he should write to his brother. Finally, the speaker writes to his brother after his daughter's death. He seems to understand what suffering feels like, which prompts him to write to his brother. As shown, through several examples in the short story, the speaker seems to understand his brother's suffering. The intention of the author/speaker is to inform the readers. There are many things that the author can inform the reader about, such as not using drugs because they lead you in the wrong direction, as well as the effect of drugs on life. But this news expresses much more than the idea of drugs. This tells us about how people express their pain and suffering. In the short story where the speaker's wife writes to the speaker, she states, "And the sound had no meaning to her, had no meaning to anyone." » is shown between Sonny and his older brother. They disagreed on what Sonny would do with his future. Sonny wants to do one thing and his brother thinks he should do something else. During the flashback, there was a conflict between Sonny and his brother. They were discussing the future of Sony. He specifies: “…There was a long silence. He moved from the kitchen table to the window. This is a really bad idea... I want to join the army. Or the navy, I don't care. If I say I'm old enough, they'll believe me. And then I got angry. It was because I was so scared. You must be crazy. You fucking idiot, why the hell do you want to go join the army? They started talking about what Sonny should do in life. Sonny wants to become a jazz musician. The speaker thinks he should do more in life than be a jazz musician. The speaker thought it was a really bad idea. for his brother. The speaker says he should live with his sister-in-law until he finishes school. Sonny didn't want to and was reluctant. But the speaker said they had a piano, but he was still angry. with his brother for not understanding what he wants for his own life. The speaker can be characterized as being considerate through their actions, thoughts, and conversations.
