    In Castro Valley, the largest majority is white, at 58%. (census.gov) At first glance, this may not seem very diverse, however, compared to the state average of 72.2%, Castro Valley is considerably more diverse. Being born in a diverse place like Castro Valley is advantageous because there is less racism. Very young people can learn about other cultures in society that are often stereotyped by others. Children can experience it first hand. According to Holtzman and Sharpe, in their essay Theories and Construct of Race, "there is evidence that implicit racial biases exist in children as young as six years old and persist into adulthood." (page) This means that racism is learned at a very young age and can last a very long time. But when kids grow up in a diverse place like Castro Valley, they can meet other kids from different backgrounds and realize that those stereotypes aren't real. Another benefit of living in a diverse place like Castro Valley is that there is more equality. Often in many parts of the country, racial minorities are not hired due to racial stereotypes. However, in Castro Valley, these racial stereotypes are strong and it benefits me, because I am a minority. Finally, thanks to the diversity of the Castro Valley, I discover the best of culture, cuisine. In Castro Valley I can go get Thai food, cross the street for 5 minutes and find a taqueria. Another five minutes and I can eat Italian food at Rigatoni. This is one of the best perks in my opinion because being able to walk for such a short time and have a huge range of restaurants to explore is fun and exciting.
