Essay / Dramatic Civil War Photographs: Hanging from...
The role of the news photographer in Gardner's era was to document history in the making, documenting the battlefield and anyone who would considered a pioneer. news. Their role was also to produce large photographic prints. Today, photojournalists play the role of visual storytellers. They must photograph, edit and present the images they have taken to tell a story that no one else can tell. They must know the job and be able to use all the tools made available very well. From Gardner's time until today, technology has changed and equipment has advanced so much that advances continue to be used to their fullest extent. The only thing I've really seen the same is the way photojournalists photograph their subjects. Some photojournalists even still use the darkroom to produce their images, and this has been around for a very long time. Studying Gardner's work and the approach he used makes his work very unique in the 1860s. He took dramatic images on the battlefield during the Civil War years, as well as portraits of President Abraham Lincoln. Looking at his images “Lewis Payne, a Conspirator, in Sweater, Seated and Handcuffed,” April 1865, Library of Congress, Washington, DC and “Hanged at the Washington Arsenal; hooded bodies of the four conspirators; Departing Crowd,” July 7, 1865, Washington, D.C. I feel like I was a man who wanted to capture the drama of the events that occurred and the prisoners that were taken away, capturing their last living moments so that families experience them. It not only tells a historical story with its images, but it also shows the history and how they dealt with murders and people of this nature by hanging them. These two paper games for adults present realistic and violent situations. We may not react to photographs in the same way that people in the 1860s may have reacted when violence was not really part of their culture. Works Cited “Art History: History of Photography”.
