Essay / The Power of School Spirit - 835
What do student-athletes and coaches want most? What more do teachers and administrators demand? School spirit answers both of these questions. Many schools across the country do not understand the importance of school spirit. School spirit has the power to work miracles in the world of sports and education, and schools have noticed. Student-athletes and coaches crave more school spirit because crowd enthusiasm provides a team with energy unattainable in other circumstances. Teachers and administrators strive for more school spirit because they want students to have a positive attitude while attending their school. What school district wouldn’t covet positive attitudes from its students? All schools need to step up their school spirit in order to benefit from the positive benefits that school spirit can provide. A tradition is something that people enjoy being involved in; whether it’s starting a new one or participating in an ongoing project. Traditions cannot work if there is no spirit present, especially school traditions. An Oregon university, Linfield, decided to start a tradition to try to spark school spirit for the upcoming sports seasons. Linfield organized what they called “Cat Camp” (Sigler). This camp trained students in cheering and carried out various activities to boost their energy. Activities Director Dan Fergueson commented: “Cat Camp went better than we had hoped, we were excited to try a new tradition and a new start, but we were quite nervous to the idea that there is not the enthusiasm that we hoped for” (Sigler). The director wasn't the only one to approve of this stimulated spirit; Sophomore Austin Browning said, "I loved the crowd's reaction when I asked them to clap because...in the middle of a sheet of paper......t plays a essential role in a school's athletic and educational programs. School spirit has the power to create tradition, “change an outcome,” “[increase morale]” (Benavidez), and improve attitude. Students, teachers, athletes, administrators, coaches, and others can all benefit from the positive effects of school spirit. School spirit is easy for some and hard for others, but supportive school spirit is something all schools need to experience. Schools should make school spirit a top priority on their list of goals because the benefits are endless. School spirit not only helps a school achieve excellence in competitive events, but it also has the ability to build endless relationships between athletes and coaches, students and teachers, and teachers and administrators. Overall, school spirit is powerful and can completely change a school.
