    The chance that a person's marriage will end in divorce currently stands at fifty percent in the United States. As a result, many children will also face divorce proceedings. What is important to note is that many children divorce before the age of six, which is very important for their development. Most importantly, from infancy through the early years of life (preschool years), children strive to form secure connections. Few studies have been carried out on the impact of divorce on children under six years old. Only one study was found in which participating children were aged 3 to 6 years (Nair and Murray, 2005). The few that have found interesting results explain how divorce before the age of six can expose children to developmental disorders (Rogers, 2004). The results also conclude that children who experienced divorce before the age of six may also face problems with love, commitment, abandonment and betrayal years later. Additionally, children of divorce have many other risk factors in their future relationships. Attachment Theory Attachment theory is based on the work of Bowlby and Ainsworth and has been supplemented by many other theorists. These theorists believe that attachment is a key aspect in determining personality and behavior throughout an individual's life. Attachment can be defined as the strong bond that develops first between parent and child, then in romantic and peer relationships. In theory, if you are able to form a secure attachment to a caregiver as a child, you will be able to form secure relationships as an adult.
