Mary Gobble PayThis article is about my ancestor, Mary Gobble Pay. I don't know much about her, but I know at least part of the story of her crossing the plains. I also know a little about her journey to America across the sea. She must have gone through some pretty difficult ordeals! I'm not going to say much, but I'll tell you a few things and then explain later. (So sorry if you don't understand something yet.) She had frostbite, she lost her sister, her brother and her mother. She also had to cut off her toes and endure many other ordeals. She was twelve years old when her family converted to the Church of Latter-day Saints. She was then baptized. They then boarded a ship (or as she called it, a sailboat) that would take them to America from England. They sang a song called “Farewell Our Native Land, Farewell” at the start of their journey to America. They remained on the ship for 6 weeks. That's a long time for a group as large as that on this ship to remain at sea. Also, during this trip, Mary's sister contracted measles. She died shortly after the ship docked. The reason she died...
