The son is also somewhat imprisoned. Throughout the story, he struggles to choose what he wants to do in life: go to school or stay home and help his father fish. It's a difficult decision for him as he is pulled in different directions as his mother wants him to stay and his father told him to go back to school. As the story begins, readers realize that the narrator works at a university. This shows that the narrator, or his son, chose to follow the path of education after his father's death. He feels like he owes it to his father to live out his dreams. Another part of this story concerns the mother's relationship with her husband and children. It's clear that she is strongly opposed to anyone doing anything other than fishing with their life. Why does she strongly hate anyone who opposes fishing, while her husband is the complete opposite? Her husband is a fisherman and wants to learn, but the mother cannot stand someone wasting their time with useless books. I feel like this may be because the mother disapproves of what her husband likes and is upset that he has to escape the life he lives with her and their children, by using books . There are key quotes throughout this novel that show the imprisonment the father suffered. Towards the end of the story, the narrator states "the brass chains on his wrist", and also "caught between two rocks". These two quotes show the imprisonment that the father experienced throughout his life and his desire to want something more in life than just fishing.
