This is not to say that conscious decision making isn't and that it isn't the best method of decision making in all situations. According to Lassiter et al (in press), participants exposed to the memorization conditions and the conscious thought conditions were able to improve their memory-based judgments because they consciously memorized the information. However, participants in the unconscious thought state and the memorization state were not asked to form an impression and did not make any judgments during acquisition. Because these participants had no judgments to retain from their memory and were distracted by the anagrams, they were unable to process the information as the conscious thought state did. This shows that by consciously thinking about the information, participants were able to remember and form the most appropriate opinions about cars compared to participants in an unconscious thinking state.
