The elements of this piece that helped shape a new musical language for the 20th century would consist of Stravinsky's experimentation with rhythms and new combinations of instruments. The way he uses dissonance in his pieces as well as polyphonic and polytonal textures. His ballets were strongly nationalistic but contained rites from ancient Russia. On the opening night of The Rite of Spring, he caused a riot because it wasn't like an ordinary ballet, it was totally different. It was not ballet dancing at all, but rather a sung dance, the different melodies and changing dissonance made ballet considered a frightening experience for some. Spring is something that is considered beautiful, light, loving and this ballet showed none of that, from the perspective of those who were present that evening. The size of the orchestra expanded and included greater use of brass and percussion. He liked to create a barbaric and primitive sound that created a pizzicato. He wanted to create a harsh, loud sound; his use of melody and harmony creates a static quality. Using limited scales and extended repetition, he also liked to use folk repetition in his pieces. Its harmonies include whole notes and eight-note scales. The interplay he creates between rhythm and meter is the most influential part of The Right of Spring. It opened a new avenue for Western music to explore outside of the traditional and regular metrical usage of Western music.
