  • Essay / The Second Amendment: The Pros and Cons of Gun Control

When we think about whether or not we need to change our current gun laws, I want everyone to remember that guns fire are not safe. Too many criminals buy guns legally and use them to commit crimes. Mandatory background checks and waiting periods would prevent criminals from committing these crimes. During the Sandy Hooks massacre, the shooter used a semi-automatic weapon among his weapons. Semi-automatic weapons are intended for military use and have no reason to be in the hands of civilians, whether for protection or for practicing sport. I also know that people worry about protecting themselves and that is why they choose to get a gun. However, there are many misguided people in our society. As a society, we would be better off if they had less access to guns. We need to add more regulations regarding obtaining guns in the United States, and we need to do it as soon as possible to prevent another massacre. As American citizens, we must come together, put aside our differences and beliefs, and do what is best for our society.
