Have your parents ever told you that smoking is bad for you? This is an article about smoking. Why people do it and what effects it has on their bodies. Some people think that smoking is fun and that it is fashionable at the moment. What they may not know is that smoking is a bad habit that can be difficult to quit at any time. Some teens may do it because their parents and friends do it. But why did their parents start smoking? Maybe it was because their parents did it, or maybe it was because their favorite hero or band smoked. If your parents didn't start smoking when they were teenagers, they may have started smoking because they were stressed at work or at home. Did you know that 188,900 (16.8%) Idaho adults smoke and 12,200 (14%) high school students smoke? In total, that’s 201,100 people smoking in Idaho. So, if so many people smoke, 61,000 children are exposed to passive smoking. So, among all of these people who smoke and are exposed, there is $294,000,000 in annual health care costs in Idaho directly caused by smoking and exposure. So how much does the average smoker spend after a certain number of years on cigarettes? Well, at the end of 16 years they have already spent $775 and at the end of 65 years they have spent $1,860,958. Wow, that's a lot of money you could have spent on something else. Did you know that smoking increases the risk of death and illness from a wide variety of diseases? In the United States, approximately 350,000 deaths are caused by smoking. Many risks increase because of smoking. There is lung cancer, which increases by 50 to 100% for each daily smoke. There are also heart diseases. Heart disease increases by approximately 100% for every pack you smoke per day. Did you know that smokers spend 27% more time in the hospital and more than twice as much time in an intensive care unit than non-smokers? The question many people ask is: “How does smoking affect your lungs”? When you smoke, the eyelashes are destroyed by the tar. When your cilia no longer work, dirt-filled mucus slides down your lungs and covers the airways, preventing air from entering or exiting properly..
