CommunicationImagine a world in which no one could communicate: there would be no direction, no rules, no relationships, no understanding, only chaos. We would have no technology, no comfort, no meaningful relationships. We would simply exist. As soon as a baby is born, the process of communication begins. A baby cries to transmit a message of hunger, illness or a dirty diaper, the parent receives this message and tries to decode it. Only over time, as the baby-parent relationship or interpersonal communication develops, does the parent begin to recognize the subtle difference in the cry and determine the need. The baby is the transmitter, the parent is the receiver, the cry is the “message” and the parent’s action is the feedback. Communication is a vital aspect of our lives. “What matters is the substance of the communication and the nature of the person communicating, including their ability to listen and speak” (Bossidy & Charan, 2002, p. 29). It allows us to form personal and professional relationships and moves in all directions: up and down, side to side in and out of our normal groups. Think of communication as a big circus tent, and inside the tent are many smaller arenas. The owner represents the politicians who fund and set overall policies, the tent represents the criminal justice organization, and the ringmaster represents the Department of Justice.
