  • Essay / The life and work of Archimedes - 550

The life and work of ArchimedesArchimedes was a very intelligent and great man. He is considered one of the three greatest mathematicians of all time, along with Newton and Gauss. In his time, he was referred to by great pseudonyms such as "The Sage", "The Master" and "The Great Geometrician". And his work has not yet been forgotten. He was undoubtedly one of the last great Greek mathematical minds this world has ever known. I will try to show you what the simple presence of Archimedes in our history meant for mathematics and even for the colony of Syracuse itself. We would not be the same without the man known simply as Archimedes. Life and family Archimedes was born in 287 BC, in Syracuse, Sicily. He remained there most of his life. He was the son of Phidias, an astronomer and was said to be related to King Heiron II for whom Archimedes would help solve his problems for him. It is not known whether he was married or even if he had children, nor his relationship with his family as the records have all been lost. Additionally, for some reason there is no record of his mother's profession or even her name. Anyway, his family was quite wealthy, for example they could afford to send him to Euclid's school in Alexandria because at that time it was the main place for intelligent education. During his time there, he probably found Apollonius of Perga, who was a student of Euclid and who was also the director of the mathematics school, which would explain who influenced him in the field of mathematics. His work and discoveriesAr...... middle of paper. .....record of “obstacles” that he had to overcome, except perhaps the jealousy of other mathematicians of his time. Archimedes' most famous quote is "Eureka", which means "I have found it". Reaction / conclusion Archimedes was a brilliant man; he excelled in engineering, math and some sciences and I can't even master a small part of any of the things he did, so I should definitely give him kudos. We would not be the same without the man known simply as Archimedes. His life was so important to the things that are taught to high school and college students around the world. I was not surprised to see that the other mathematicians were jealous of him and wanted to take away some of his notoriety and fame. People tend to do that, even now.
