  • Essay / Louisana Clean Air Act - 789

For this research paper, I have chosen to discuss Louisiana's air quality and its effects on the community. I grew up here in Baker, Louisiana, north of Baton Rouge. As I grew up, I noticed something very striking and strange. We are too exposed to chemical factories and their production. Driving around Baton Rouge at night and seeing a distant flame, I often wonder what it really was. I wonder how this affected the community. How has this affected our health? While doing some research I found out that this is called disrupted emissions. Disturbed emissions are unplanned events that release VOCs into the air. The Bucket Brigade, an anti-energy group, calls the emissions accidents. Each year, they release an annual report that provides information on the air quality of the state of Louisiana. A group called Energize LA refuted the report. They argued that the facts reported by the Bucket Brigade were inaccurate. The views of both will be explained in detail. For this research paper, there will be a discussion of the disruptive effects of emissions on communities and health. As well as the correlation to previous class discussions on the Clean Air Act. The Bucket Brigade's annual report says massive amounts of pollutants were released. It says Louisiana refineries recorded an average of six disrupted emissions per week in 2012. There were more than 327 disrupted emissions in 2012. That number was down from 346 since 2011. They are working with insiders to become whistleblowers within the oil industry and government agencies. They want people to advocate against the illegal behavior that is happening. The Bucket Brigade contacted the various refineries but only one responded. According to their list of major air pollution-related accidents in 2012, Exxon Mob... middle of newspaper... November 13).
