Essay / Pheoby in Janie's best friend in Eatonville - 2033
1. Pheoby is Janie's best friend in Eatonville. Pheoby is the only person who is kind to and cares about Janie in town after she returns. Janie feels like she can trust Pheoby with her story, and when people ask, Pheoby will tell them exactly what Janie told him. She won't add her own details to the story and she won't make up lies about what happened while Janie was gone. She also won't start rumors or gossip about Janie's story. Plus, Pheoby won't judge Janie for leaving Eatonville and killing Tea Cake. Most of the other women in town wouldn't want anything to do with her because they would think she was crazy to run off with someone and then kill them. She knows Pheoby won't do that. After Janie finishes telling Pheoby her life story, Pheoby is happy that Janie was able to go out and live a life that she missed out on when she married Jody. I think Pheoby has a newfound respect for Janie because she was able to live the life she wanted filled with adventure, and she was able to stand up for herself and fall in love. Pheoby even said, "'Ah, I grew ten feet taller just listening to you, Janie.' Ah, I'm not satisfied with myself, not anymore. I criticize you by hearing." (Hurston 182-183).2. The pear tree, the ocean, the horizon, the hurricane are Janie's view of nature. Hurston uses spring as a sign of fertility, of blossoming sexuality and new beginnings. The pear tree represents Janie blossoming into womanhood. In Janie's eyes, the pear tree represents beauty and freedom because she is able to reflect on her life and her future. do when sitting under the middle of a paper......riumph.13 Colloquialism is “a word or phrase that is used primarily in informal speech: a colloquial expression” (merriam-webster. .com). An example of colloquialism would be: "My God, Ah, I don't see how come you can't There's nothing at all that can bother you if you have a thimble. sew full of common sense. You understand. Ah, I've had too much to do as mayor. This city needs a little light right now. (Hurston 41). This quote not only shows the reader that this book takes place in the deep south, but it also shows that Jody always wants Janie to agree with him and not have her own opinions. Hurston uses different types of colloquial language to show where the characters come from but also to show how they compare to different social classes. She also uses colloquial language to enrich each character, and give them their own way of speaking and their own way of expressing themselves...
