    In the play The Tempest by William Shakespeare, Caliban is an important character. Caliban is a character who embodies both a victim to be pitied and a villain to watch out for. In this essay, I will clearly show how Caliban is a victim and a villain by exploring his relationship with Prospero, Miranda, and the island. Caliban was abused for many reasons. He and Miranda definitely don't have a good relationship, in fact Miranda absolutely hates him and she's afraid of him. However, she treated him badly psychologically. “'He's a bad man, sir,/I don't like to look.' (ac1.2.370-371). She calls him mean and says she doesn't like him. “Abhorred slave/whom every trace of goodness does not want to take/being capable of all evil!” (1.2.422-24).
