Essay / Nutrition Writing Style - 996
Food is a universal need similar to writing. Writing is one of the best means of communication and without it our society would not thrive. As with food, everyone needs it to be able to flourish. Writing in any field is crucial for communication, especially in the field of nutrition, as dietitians come into contact with people every day. Writing in different styles encompasses most of the things dietitians do for a living. The minimum qualification for employment is a bachelor's degree, but those with a master's degree tend to go further and be more successful. A career in nutrition can be very versatile, due to its breadth. The types of writing required continue to diversify. After conducting an open-ended survey of six nutrition majors, consisting of three undergraduate and graduate students, responses indicated that most responses varied from person to person. Although some responses correlate with graduate students focusing more on quantitative analysis and interpretation of data, including reports and graphs, undergraduate students' writing style is more focused on research papers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, dietitians are experts in nutrition, healthy eating, and counseling people about a balanced diet (“Dietitians and Nutritionists”). Although none of the subjects have yet become dietitians, the graduate students are the closest. They are better prepared and have more visibility in the field due to the fact that they were previously undergraduates. Therefore, this helped them formulate more detailed responses. Although the responses were anonymous, for the entire survey it was clear which questions the graduate students answered. For example, a graduate...... middle of paper ......th. Depending on how far the person has come in their career will ultimately determine how much writing they see in the future. In nutrition, research articles will be a dominant writing style throughout one's career, but primarily at the undergraduate level. During graduate school and further into their careers, students will focus on reporting and graphical information. Depending on whether the person likes qualitative or quantitative will also help them decide which area to research. Nutrition students should experiment with different writing styles to find the one they prefer and research the area of dietetics in which the writing style dominates.
