    The evil doesn't even begin to cover it. The massacre of millions of people. The complete annihilation of an entire society. Each genocide is based on the same fundamental principles, but a distinct face. A dictator takes control of a weak country with the promise of restoring it to its former glory. Once he has everyone's support, he enforces extremely discriminatory laws and finds reasons to kill anyone who dares oppose him. The Holocaust and the Cambodian genocides are remarkably similar, yet strikingly different. The Holocaust was an attempt to eliminate all Jews and other minorities such as Gypsies and people with disabilities. The Cambodian genocide, led by Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, was something of a reflection of the Holocaust, but it happened forty-two years later. On the other hand, there are many other distinctions that set Cambodia apart from all other genocides. Although the two genocides are quite different at first glance, they are curiously similar upon closer examination. For starters, the Holocaust is best known for the brutal and inhumane treatment of prisoners, such as tattooing a number on their arm against their will and feeding them food that wasn't even fit for dogs to eat. (“Holocaust”). It may be shocking for some people to learn that in Cambodia it was just as atrocious, perhaps even worse. When the Khmer Rouge took power in 1975, most Cambodians were forced to leave their homes at such short notice that many families were killed in the city for not evacuating quickly enough. Those who were "lucky" to escape immediate death were forced to work, unpaid, in labor camps until fatigue exhausted their immune systems and they died a miserable death. disease (“genocide”).
