Essay / What is the topic of abortion and abortion - 811
Although still a common procedure in the 1930s, men of that era viewed and handled abortions without concern and barely talked about it because they were considered unimportant due to their lack of knowledge and awareness of the repercussions. In Ernest Hemingway's Hills Like White Elephants, the way one man viewed pregnancy and abortion and decided to handle the process in the 1930s is highlighted. But in recent years, with the growing sensitivity and negative stigma attached to abortion, it has been taken more seriously by today's men since they have understood the meaning of the procedure and its impact on their lives. The male character "The American" is described as an intelligent, well-traveled and independent man. Throughout the story, the reader is able to determine their views on abortion through their language, behavior, and actions. He nonchalantly declares to his female counterpart: "It really is a terribly simple operation" and that "It's not really an operation at all." » (Hemingway 1). The American is truly determined to achieve his goal: to convince the young girl to have surgery. He's constantly trying to prove that it's the best choice to make. The American's masculine bravado is so great that he loses interest in everything the girl has to say. The American can be considered selfish and inconsiderate when he says: "It's the only thing that made us unhappy." » (Hemingway 1). He is clearly not in favor of the idea of having a child and sees it as a heavy burden and interference rather than a gift and blessing. He's happy that it's just the two of them and he doesn't want to share her with anyone, no matter the situation. His lack of emotion and understanding...... middle of paper ......that's the problem. If a pregnancy is followed, many positive emotions accompany this special moment of giving birth to a child. But when the opposite happens with abortion and loss of life, a man may suffer great sorrow accompanied by guilt or a feeling of regret. This stress could lead to problems that are detrimental to the person's physical, emotional and psychological health. Every man's grieving experience is unique and can vary from man to man. As America and its society have progressed, so have opinions on abortion from the male perspective. By being constantly informed and aware of the entire process and its effects on our country over the years, men have been able to become more understanding and aware of what their abortion choices mean..
