The women in a young girl's life can have a huge impact on that girl's development. For example, in Scout's life, she has three people who teach three different things. There is a goalkeeper, a supporter and a teacher. These people are Calpurnia, Miss Maudie and Aunt Alexander respectively. From Calpurnia she learns discipline, from Miss Maudie and Aunt Alexander she learns to behave properly. Even though she doesn't have a mother, there are very strong female presences in her life. Calpurnia being the main influence in his life. Calpurnia was the motherly influence in the Scouts' lives. "She was all angles and bones; she was short-sighted; she was cross-eyed; her hand was as wide as a bed slat and twice as hard." (Lee, 3 years old) She had a very imposing presence in the life of the scouts. Scout respected and slightly feared her, something all great mothers strive to achieve. She laid down the law on Scout and meted out discipline as she saw fit. "Our battles were epic and one-sided. Calpurnia always won, mainly because Atticus always took her side." (Lee, 3) She was not willing to take anything from Scout. She knew what was right and stuck to it. “She had been with us since Jem was born, and I had felt her tyrannical presence for as long as I could remember.” (Lee, 3) Even though Scout makes it seem more dramatic, Calpurnia has always been there to take care of her and Jem. Even though Scout makes her seem evil, Calpurnia truly loves and cares for Atticus' children. "It wasn't often that she made crackling bread, she said she never had time, but with both of us at school, today had been an easy day for her. She knew I loved crackling bread. 'I missed you today,' she said. (Lee, 15) Clearly, Calpurnia has a hidden weak point... middle of paper ...... regarding her vast back lot, terms so generous we rarely spoke to her, so careful have- We tried to preserve the delicate balance of our relationship, but Jem and Dill brought me closer to her with their behavior. " (Lee, 22) Miss Maudie was kind and someone Scout could talk to about anything. She was the only woman who never really wondered how she was. Many young girls grow up without female influence. Without a mother, one could think Scout would be the same However, there are three major female influences, Calpurnia, Miss Maudie and Aunt Alexander, and many other minor influences Another specific influence is Miss Caroline. these people help her grow and become a woman. When we look at these relationships, we can understand why both parties do what they do..
