    A. Field Question and Geographic ContextHow are housing prices affected by the location of shopping centers in the Washington, DC metropolitan area? By sampling homes for sale within a 2-mile radius of two shopping centers in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, it is possible to determine the correlation between shopping center locations and housing prices. Two shopping centers will be studied in the Washington DC metropolitan area to answer this question. Tyson's Galleria, located in Tyson's Corner between Vienna and McLean, Virginia, is the largest shopping center in Virginia and is 12.5 miles from Washington, DC's central business district. The second shopping center sampled is Landmark Mall, which is located in a triangle formed by Duke Street (Virginia State Route 236), Shirley Highway (I-395), and Van Dorn Street (Virginia State Route 401) in Alexandria, Virginia. By sampling similar homes and finding the price differences between homes near each shopping center, a positive or negative correlation between the two factors can be found. Tyson's Galleria shopping center has enjoyed great success in recent years since its opening. The shopping center was opened in 1968 and today houses more than 300 stores and services. This success could be a factor in housing prices near the mall, which will be precisely determined by the survey. In contrast, Landmark Mall has become unpopular and dilapidated in recent years. It was opened in 1965 and declared bankruptcy in April 2009. Again, this could be factored into the housing prices surrounding the area.
