Essay / Popular Music: The Creative Process - 1041
The Oxford Dictionary defines creativity as “the use of imagination or original ideas to create something; ingenuity". According to this, the creative process is the way in which an individual develops his or her creative ideas. Under this umbrella lies improvisation and, in particular, free improvisation (or free jazz). "Improvisation consists to… react honestly to changing circumstances, and…. enjoy the process without forcing to achieve a known result Creativity and improvisation come from deep within us, almost decided by our subconscious. then be directed by conscious thought and the events around us at a given moment “Even without thinking, [musicians] can make musical gestures that direct the course of an improvisation.” anyone can determine where their creativity comes from, but by retracing my steps, I was able to follow my thought process through to my final improvisation performance, and thus develop an overview of my creative process. Western culture, popular music dominates the radio. Young musicians, especially singers, are taught to learn music as it was written or as they hear it on recordings. It wasn't until I was fifteen that I discovered this idea in progress. I would improvise in classes of about five students, and it would be structured around gospel songs and emotion-centered songs. As a singing teacher, I view improvisation as an important tool for ear training and personal development as an artist. This is why I teach improvisation to my students from the age of nine. When it comes to using improvisation as a means of developing musical identity, one must be free to explore, in order to create this genre...... middle of paper ...... it will take know the cues/what emotions are trying to be represented through improvisation. This way I can also add to the visual aesthetic since the stages of grief can be presented in a slideshow in the background during the performance. It is intended that each slide will also have a different color to make it easier for musicians to transition from one stage of mourning to another, without them having to read the lyrics and therefore completely turn their backs on the audience. The creative process is developed creativity. over time. When considering free improvisation, it is important to consider the line between freedom and fluidity and thoughtful choices. One must be open to new ideas, but it is also important that the improviser “trusts their body awareness [and] feels that the music is happening without thought or control. It just flows.”
