Analysis of I Know What You Did Last Summer'I Know What You Did Last Summer' directed by Jim Gillespie . The film is based on four high school graduates. A wild night of fun turns to fear as the fearful four run over a passing figure. In a moment of desperation, the group decides to dump the body in a nearby lake. The fourth graders then go on a trip to work on the collage, when a year later they meet back home for the summer vacation. The four all start receiving threats saying "I know what you did last summer". The roller coaster ride of I Know What You Did Last Summer begins. The film fits into the horror genre with its collection of horror conventions of the damsel in distress scene, blood, mutilated bodies and the essential of horror - murder! The opening sequence begins with a horror classic. convention - dark atmosphere. The camera shot zooms out to the sea, giving a dark effect, followed by the crashing of waves on the rocks. Creepy gothic-type music is played alongside the opening credits to unnerve the audience. The camera pans around and shows us a blurry figure on top of the cliff, suggesting that the figure is there attempting suicide. There is an instant change in mood, from the dark, gloomy scene accompanied by gothic music to the bright, bustling fireworks, releasing any audience tension and suspense built up during the opening sequence. Another example of a scene with a dark atmosphere is that of the four students on a secluded beach. The friends sit around a burning, roaring fire with strong winds blowing constantly. Long, wailing music plays subtly as the four tell scary stories. The main objective of the director is to reconstruct ...... middle of paper ...... and the distance of the shot. For example, rapid camera movements are used during a car chase scene as the killer chases Max. The camera angels are constantly changing, drawing the audience toward the screen, with each shot lasting literally seconds. The movements affect the atmosphere as they redefine the emotions and feelings of the audience, leaving them excited alongside a mixture of feelings. I think "I Know What You Did Last Summer" has become one of the best horror films, but many other horror films have come out similar to this one. it contained all the conventions of horror. For most of the movie I wanted to know what was going to happen next, constant tension and anxiety took over my body. The music used in the film was the perfect complement to the finishing touches, it fit with the scenes, giving the perfect horror film..
