The Greenwich Association for Retarded Citizens (GARC) of Greenwich HighThe Greenwich Association of Retarded Citizens (GARC) of GreenwichHigh is a group of students interested in interacting with students with disabilities. students also go to high school and are eager to get to know us. Each of the students has different disabilities but they each have a desire to make friends. This group is completely voluntary for all its members, no one is obliged to attend. I have been a member of this group for the three years I have been attending Greenwich High. Spending a lot of time with these kids, I've learned to understand that they're just looking to make friends. I joined this group in first grade because I had worked with children with Down syndrome in eighth grade at Central Middle School. My interest continued over the years because of the many fun times I had and made friends with many girls. They are all very friendly and nice to chat with. They each have special characteristics that set them apart from others, making them special in different ways, just like us. Besides the meetings we have from time to time to discuss activities we can do, we usually do fun and interesting activities. . We frequently go out for pizza because that seems to be the group consensus on what we would all like to eat. During the holidays we celebrate in interesting ways; On Halloween we have a party where everyone dresses up and brings candy. For the Christmas season, we will celebrate with a party at a member's house, listen to Christmas carols and have dinner. We held bake and candy sales to raise funds for club activities. These are usually successful because everyone participates and we all seem to function well as a group. When there are dances or football matches at school, we each take one of the girls and it's good for them because they can interact with the rest of the school at a big function. This club is not only fun, but it's like going to a meet up with some of your friends. We are a small group and we all get along. Since we are a small group, it is also difficult for us to do a lot of things. It is difficult to educate the majority of the public who do not know what these children look like..
