  • Essay / The effects of social and political changes on fashion...

This essay will explore the effects of social and political changes on fashion in the 1980s. This period was chosen because the new romantic fashions were so different punk fashions before, so this essay will identify the changes that took place to influence this change. The main evidence used to support the findings will include interviews and photographs which will show a first-hand account of the period. In order to understand why punk was born, previous periods will be taken into account. The baby boom following the war resulted in large numbers of people being born at the same time. Subsequently, the consequences were mass unemployment for young people. The punk era saw angry and rebellious citizens expressing their opinions through loud music and creating songs about making a political statement. Celebrities and musicians such as Sex Pistols sang of their belief that there was no future for themselves and the country and sang "anarchy for Britain". The slogan “No future” originally comes from the sex guns song “God save the Queen”. The impression given by punks was seen as negative by the older generation, but younger audiences felt they could relate to the situations being sung about. A turning point in the 1980s showed a complete opposite. A new sense of hope for the country began to manifest itself in contrast to the atmosphere of previous eras. Artists such as Marilyn now sang about love and romance in her songs like "call your name" and "give it up", which reflected a more positive attitude of citizens. It was also a reflection of how politics had begun to change, but this positivity was not embraced by everyone and a split within civil society...... middle of paper ... ...representation by ear of how punk accessorized their clothes because the words look like graffiti. Again, it's not directly related to the punk era, but there is a common characteristic within it. In addition to this, the words are also linked to various beliefs/campaigns, just like 80s clothing. Although both of these clothing items are modern and newly designed, they both reflect aspects present in the 80s. To conclude , social and political changes were reflected in fashion during this era and the influences impacted both the punks and the new romantics of the era. The division between the two groups was not only determined by their dress, but also by their music, beliefs, and professional roles within society, as noted throughout this essay. The first-hand account also supported the evidence for the changes that were studied.
