Essay / Pros and Cons of Censorship: Controlling Media and Ideas
Censorship, or what I like to call “controlled media,” is the control of ideas and content in our world. Ever since people discovered that human beings have free will, there has been a way to regulate, govern, and block the expression of its uses. There are many types of censorship when it comes to military, religious, political, public media or simply for moral reasons. There have naturally been debates over whether censorship was truly a restriction on expression, imposed to protect people from themselves and others, or whether, in essence, it was simply futile nowadays. I think these are all valid reasons why censorship has its pros and cons, but is nonetheless rather unnecessary. Censorship is useful when it comes to hiding sensitive military information because it can be used by the enemy. Some may say that censorship is absolutely necessary to protect your nation, which is military censorship, but is it more important than for morale reasons? In the article The Web, the Spider and the Fly, Seydou Amadou Oumarou and René Lefort essentially answer this question: “Government restrictions can be imposed in the name of morality, but they are mainly used to prevent the use of Internet for “subversive” purposes. “ends.” (2). The government may view censorship as a more effective way to protect itself than to protect its people, but I personally believe that the people are more important because there is no need for government without the people. Censorship can protect people for several reasons. It prevents content such as pornographic images or dangerous and impressionable stunts from corrupting and harming young people. Spreading racism, false/harmful information, offensive content and harmful influences on another sect...... middle of paper ......e directed to a Korean government block page. This lasted for about two weeks until some of them found a way around it. I forgot how since I'm not very familiar with computer uses, but nonetheless this is just one example of why censorship is useless to me. I compare censorship to using a double-edged sword. This can be an invaluable weapon in theory, but it can also be misused and cause knockback. Suppressing ideas and content is of course beneficial against bad people, but it also inhibits and restrains people who are sufficiently informed. Just imagine if they withheld from people the information that the world was round and not flat just because they thought Pythagoras and Aristotle were crazy and didn't think people could handle the truth. IMHO, censorship is helpful on some occasions, harmful for many reasons, and not a factor in the overall scheme of things..
