The Alchemy of Desire by Tarun Tejpal (2005) is a story about desire. The novel opens with the quote: "Love is not the greatest glue between two people, sex is" and ends with "Sex is not the greatest glue between two people, the love is…. » (The Alchemy of Desire, 3.518)Amidst the quotes, Tarun Tejpal explores what he calls “The Alchemy of Desire”. The word “Alchemy” has a scientific origin meaning creation, combination or transformation of something from very original and basic to very valuable. (Concise Oxford English Dictionary). The main goal is to explore the value of desire. The desire that can fuel jealousy, dismay, the truth and the hallucination of reality. The story of the novel revolves around a young couple from a small town in India, penniless but inglorious in love with each other, who move to the big city, where the man works intensely on a novel, with the support of his wife, stopping only to feed his incessant desire for his beautiful wife. They both left Delhi for an old house in the fog-masked Himalayas. They bought this house from a man named Stephen. While renovating their new dilapidated house, the young man unearths a chest full of diaries written by Catherine. It revealed a series of intense relationships (sexual and otherwise) with (and between) various Indian men, including the prince. The narrator cannot get away from his wife for the first time. His involvement with a newspaper led him to discover the truth about his own desires and passions. To support the theme of desire, the theory of the Hierarchy of Needs given by Abraham Maslow is suggested, which best suits the theme of the novel. He is a famous psychologist who gave a theory of motivation which defines five growth needs. Desire is a need that is in the middle of paper......rite. He started with the physical, moved to Karma and reached Satya. Since he understood the motive of his life and also that desire creates love, beauty and art.
