  • Essay / The Influential Civil Rights Movement - 997

From the 1980s to the 1990s, the people of the United States faced economic decline and the transformation of the nation. People followed President Reagan's conservatism, hoping that he would restore the economy and solve economic problems such as homelessness, poverty, the budget deficit, and inequality.[ James Oakes, et al. Of The People: A History Of The United States (Oxford University Press, 2011), 940.] But Reagan did not completely resolve these problems: the popular movement reflected the existence of inequalities. To achieve globalization and an information-centered American economy, American leaders wanted to transform the nation. During the transformation process, the decline of the manufacturing sector led to the loss of jobs, so many people found more than one job and worked longer. Little by little, the rich became richer, while the poor became poorer. Inequality has reappeared. Over the decades, several groups of people, such as African Americans, have faced inequality, women have faced injustice, and gay people have faced discrimination and attempted to change their circumstances giving rise to a civil rights movement. And their movement strongly influenced people as they fought for their rights. African Americans suffered from racial inequality, but they fought for justice and made an impact. Conservatives were concerned about promoting racial equality. President Reagan even opposed the creation of a national holiday marking Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday.[James Oakes, et al. Of The People: A History Of The United States (Oxford University Press, 2011), 932.] who gave a wonderful anti-war speech in New York, calling on people to oppose war and achieve social justice . In fact, King'...... middle of paper ...... does not strictly choose non-homosexuals;[ James Oakes, et al. Of The People: A History Of The United States (Oxford University Press, 2011), 960.] Some gays marry people of the same sex, living equally and happily. In conclusion, conservatism has limited the equality and other rights of certain groups of people such as African Americans, women, and homosexuals. In the 1980s, many conservatives seemed successful because they achieved their goal: protecting the American economy and people from economic decline. In the 1990s, Americans wanted to achieve globalization and transform the nation, but inequality returned. In fact, the civil rights movement from the 1980s to the 1990s changed people positively. Black people enjoy equality; women courageously do things that men can do; homosexuals seek the happiness they truly desire. These are all precious legacies given by the civil rights movement..
