Essay / The advantages and disadvantages of dietary supplements - 1058
One of the main ingredients in dietary supplements is caffeine. Caffeine can stimulate the heart, relax smooth muscles and is also diuretic. Diuretic is a medication that can cause an increase in urine volume by removing salt and water from the body. Caffeine may stop the chemical messenger that stimulates the two neurotransmitters that increase the rate and force of heart muscle contractions. In other words, it can cause an increase in blood pressure and deliver more oxygen to the brain, causing significant damage to the body. Ephedrine is another major ingredient in dietary supplements. This ingredient is a stimulant and can make you lose your appetite. To rephrase it, ephedrine is an appetite suppressant. It is also a “component of adrenaline” (Stern). Ephedrine stimulates the central nervous system and increases your mental awareness, heart rate, breathing and metabolism. Ephedrine may also increase thermogenesis, or the production of heat in organisms. They cause an increase in metabolism and promote the loss of body fat. With these two ingredients, ephedrine has a greater impact on weight loss but is by far the more dangerous ingredient. Take a look at these ingredients and ask yourself if any of them look like ingredients you would want to ingest. Personally, I wouldn't want to risk taking any of these ingredients and putting my body into it.
