  • Essay / Genetically Modified Crops - 845

Genetically modified (GM) crops are being developed today to help provide the world's growing population with the plants we all depend on for survival. Genes are placed in plants to help them withstand adverse conditions that would have caused yield loss in the past. Plants are also processed to allow us to get the most out of the crops we grow. Even with these benefits, there are perceived consequences that have given rise to much debate about this technology. The arguments on both sides approach the same issues from different angles. These concerns include how the use of genetically modified crops, or lack thereof, will impact the environment, human health and the economy. There are legitimate concerns on both sides, but the all-or-nothing attitude of these debates will never lead to a reasonable conclusion. Opponents of the use of genetically modified crops believe that their use will have a detrimental effect on the environment. One of the biggest concerns is that cross-pollination will cause the introduced genes to be incorporated into the genomes of other plants. This could give rise to herbicide-resistant “superweeds” that are extremely difficult to eradicate. There are also concerns that bugs could also be affected. Some believe it is possible that transformed crops with genes increasing pest resistance will harm essential pollinators such as bees and butterflies. On the other hand, some worry that pests may become resistant to pesticides introduced to crops. Supporters of genetically modified crops say they are safe and can even protect the environment. With their built-in pest resistance, plants need to be sprayed less often with pesticides. This helps...... middle of paper ...... it is believed to be under the influence of agribusiness. I think the best way to address these concerns is to find a balance between both parties. In my opinion, genetically modified crops are important to use as the Earth's population increases and the climate changes. On the other hand, I also believe that it is important to preserve organic farming techniques in order to produce pure, high-quality food for human consumption. I think this technology needs to be highly regulated and products containing these organisms need to be clearly identified so that people have the choice to use them or not. I also believe that this technology is important for humanity and should be made available at prices that will reduce inequality. All arguments considered, genetically modified crops must be approached with great caution, but banning their use outright would be a mistake..
