When she won this award, she said: “In my mind, I see a line. And beyond that line I see green fields, and pretty flowers, and beautiful white women with their arms outstretched toward me above that line, but somehow I can't get there. I can't get past this line. And let me tell you something. The only thing that separates women of color from others is opportunity. You can’t win an Emmy for roles that just don’t exist.” Since opportunity is the starting point for all exposure, there must be more complex, less sexualized, and more versatile roles for African American women who do not take on roles that negatively portray who they are.
