Essay / Group Communication and Conflict - 2208
“Role conflict can arise when these expectations of how to play a role or set of roles are inconsistent in some way” (Losh, p 89). Role conflict is a type of social conflict caused by an individual being forced to assume separate and incompatible roles. Role conflicts typically occur when an individual is torn between distinct roles for different organizations or groups or within an organization, when an individual is asked to take on multiple roles in the same group. An employee holding both work and management roles in a department, for example, takes on the conflicting roles of supervisor and colleague. Many feel that most role conflicts arise because of multiple obligations to different groups. Role conflicts can also arise within the same organization. When individuals have various conflicting responsibilities, role conflicts tend to cause friction and frustration depending on the individual's personality. During my research, I saw a lot happening from customer assistant specialists, medical communication specialists, nurse consultants, pharmacists and especially floaters. Many employees seem extremely frustrated and overwhelmed. It seems that even though we meet customer needs, we ultimately harm our employees. We force our employees to essentially manage 2 to 3 positions in 1 to satisfy the customer. The customer requests that someone be on the line all day but wants them to be able to call back as well. This task is impossible given that we have such a high call volume. The problem seems to be that there aren't enough people on this particular project. We scatter our employees. We are...... middle of paper......communication can be the death knell for any organization.References:1. Losh, S. (2011). Group behavior in organizations. San Diego: Bridgepoint Education, Inc.2.
