Essay / Exploring Genetic Engineering: A Modern Breakthrough
The medical field has also reaped the benefits of genetic engineering. With recent discoveries and understanding of a large number of debilitating illnesses and injuries, researchers are working to develop new ways to keep humans healthier for longer periods of time. Advances in technology, genetic engineering procedures, and new medications have allowed researchers to discover methods that can be used to help people suffering from many illnesses and injuries. According to an article titled Genetic Engineering Breakthrough published in News Medical, “Scientists have made significant advances in muscle regeneration. They are trying to help bedridden patients and elite athletes by designing a “switch” that will activate mutations or light signals in muscle stem cells. This discovery could also be used as a tool for studying difficult-to-treat muscle cancers. Dr. Charles Keller, MD, assistant professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center and principal investigator involved in the work, said: “We hope that the genetically engineered mouse models we have developed will help scientists and clinicians to better understand how muscle stem cells are made to regenerate muscles
