Essay / The importance of qualitative methods between Mandarin...
The two studies chosen for this critical essay explore areas of linguistics, drawn from different academic sources, each effectively deriving theories from areas of linguistics that have been neglected. The first article is a multilinguistic study that quantitatively measures voice onset time in a comparative manner between Mandarin Chinese and English. The second article aims to discover the influence of language barriers on trust, particularly in multinational companies, through qualitative methods. This essay supports an appropriate choice of method for both studies, alongside the idea that qualitative methods would perhaps be more ideal for exploring new areas, particularly in terms of linguistics, while quantitative measures would be more effective and more rigorous to test hypotheses. Chao K and Chen L (2008) attempted to locate differences in voice onset time (VOT), "the time interval between the startle that marks the release of stop closure and the beginning of the quasi-periodicity which reflects the laryngeal vibration” (Lisker and Abramson 1964: 422). ) in stop consonant productions between Mandarin Chinese and English. Using Wavesurfer software for acoustic VOT measurements, 11 female Mandarin speakers, with an average age of 27, and four native speakers of British English, with an average age of 32, read aloud five times a global list. The global lists focused on Mandarin Chinese vocabulary, with words disyllabic due to the nature of Mandarin characters and their tendency to be in pairs. The words had to be similar in vowel and consonant contexts so that they could be read at a comfortable speed. The first iteration of all participants was not used for analysis so that participants could feel comfortable first....... middle of document...... udinal analysis as It was carried out in 2011 and 2012. So, to truly establish the effects of poor communication on trust, the research should have extended to other countries and sectors of origin, and perhaps invested in a longitudinal study. Harzing's study helps fill some of the "many gaps in research on innovative assessment methods such as portfolios" (Johnston 2004, p396) and sheds light on the long-standing debate regarding the uncertain effects of team diversity on team performance. areas of interest in an appropriate methodological manner with regard to qualitative and quantitative means. It is important to note that triangulation may have enhanced the authenticity of Harzing's study, but Chao and Chen's study was apparently effective as a quantitative approach only, as it allowed researchers to draw meaningful conclusions..
