Essay / Description of the different types of leukemia - 954
Leukemia is a disease that can lead to death. Leukemia is defined as the type of blood cell cancer that causes cells to malfunction, usually affecting white blood cells. This occurs when an abnormal increase in the number of immature blood cells is produced compared to mature blood cells. A large number of abnormal blood cells produced caused the bone marrow to contain more abnormal cells, causing difficulty for normal cells to survive. This disease spreads unchecked among cells and can lead to the death of patients. The type of leukemia and the age of the patient affect the survival rates of people with leukemia (Bozzone, 2009). As survival rates improve with chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation, patients must manage long-term illness related to treatment-related illnesses (Agarwal and Thomas, 2008). In general, leukemia can be described into three broad categories: type of leukemia, symptoms of leukemia, and treatments (see Figure 1 in Appendix 1). The first major category of leukemia is types of leukemia. The types of leukemia are divided into two, namely acute leukemia and chronic leukemia. Acute and chronic leukemias are classified based on the progression of the cell. First, acute leukemia refers to a rapidly growing cancer and can invade the body over several weeks or months. The cells replicate and accumulate very quickly as the hematopoietic cells remain immature (American Cancer Society, 2013). Patients with this type of leukemia should be treated immediately. Acute leukemia is divided into two subclasses which are acute myelogenous (granulocytic) leukemia (AML) and acute lymphocytic (lymphoblastic) leukemia (ALL).
