Essay / Essay on Western Culture - 1605
The way Western and Eastern cultures interpret the body and mind is like looking at a painting. One individual may interpret it as a symbol with a deeper meaning, while another individual may simply look at the painting and perceive only the image projected in front of it. Western culture identifies stress and emotions as a liability to an individual's overall health. At one time, there was a correlation between feeling grief and death. For example, when a woman died and a month later her husband died, the reason for death was thought to be grief. Therefore, the death certificate would list “Bereavement” as the probable cause of death. Times have changed and this is no longer acceptable. It cannot be proven that grief causes death. In Western culture, treating the mind and body involves regulating stress instead of an invisible internal energy that Eastern culture believes in (Selhub 2007). In a way, Western culture allows a little of Eastern culture to intervene in the treatment of patients. Some Western doctors have looked into transcendental meditation, mindfulness meditation, guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation, hypnosis, and autogenic training. Patients showed improvement in their mood and health. However, skepticism remains high. One article states that "better studies are needed to fully determine what benefits meditation has for patients.". »
