Essay / Losing the Fight - 647
In “Lord of the Flies,” William Golding delivers a realistic fictional story like no other author can. It tells the story of a group of boys stranded on an island, fighting between the forces of good and evil. The story is driven by powerful diction, chilling details and insightful imagery to show how the shell is a symbol of good used by Ralph to show the boys' responsibility while the sow's head is a symbol of evil used by Jack to strike fear into the boys. When Ralph and Piggy discovered the conch, they realized it could be used to communicate to summon the boys. Golding expresses Ralph's lack of power by saying "the most powerful[l] was the conch" (Golding 22), this shows that although Ralph has power over the boys, the conch is more powerful than him. If Ralph calls the boys, they won't answer, so he has to blow the conch to bring the boys together. The conch is believed to teach boys responsibility, because eventually, if they hear it enough, it will connect the two. After Jack tells Ralph how he killed the pig, Ralph responds "with the conch imp calling a meeting", you can see he is trying to stay calm when he says "when I blow it". Now!" (75) This shows that in the midst of all the bad things happening, Ralph feels like he has to restore order among the boys. He can't lose his hold on them, so he has to using the conch to its full power Golding uses an exquisite play on words when he states that "the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments" and that it "ceased to exist" (181), which shows that the conch shell. conch no longer has power because it doesn't exist without the conch, there would be no sense of responsibility on the island. Now that the conch is gone, evil has a chance to thrive and thrive. ...... middle of paper ... since they put it to good use When Ralph finds the sow's head in the forest, he hits it and it comes back "smiling", so he hits it at. again and she falls and her "smile is now six feet wide" (185) Jack was trying to convince Ralph to join his tribe, but he won't stop at nothing for power. . Without the “big shell of cream”, there is nothing good left on the island. When the conch shell broke, Ralph had no power, so the jack became the main rule. The breaking of the conch took away all the good things and left all the bad things there to thrive and prosper. Ralph must now find a way to survive until they are rescued. The conch had so much power and Ralph used it the best he could. The sow's head also had a lot of power and Jack used it as well. Objects had so much control over them. Works Cited Lord of the Flies
