Essay / Breaking the Mode in Frida and Like Water for Chocolate
In her essay, Hélène Cixous discusses the gender-based structure imposed on women. According to his findings, to destabilize the masculine structure, it is necessary to question the link between writing and sexuality in order to bring women out of the non-existence that they have been. In the films Frida and Like Water for Chocolate, the two main characters Frida from Frida and Tita from Like Water for Chocolate manage to free themselves from the complex web of cultural determinations to challenge the predefined ideological system in which they have been forced to live. .These two films took place behind the scenes of the Mexican Revolution. During the 1900s, the role of women was submissive and not very visible. Social constructs such as women's role was to marry and reproduce were very much on hold. However, the situation began to change. Some women around the world have started to break free from this behavior and decided to become more visible. In Frida Kahlo's film, Frida managed to break the cultural determinations that women had to follow during their periods. Frida managed to break the chains by questioning the norms of Mexican society. Her behavior defied all the roles assigned to women by society. From the start, she was rebellious and determined. Throughout the film, actions like bringing a boy into one's house and being sexually active before getting married were not very acceptable in society and were not well looked upon. Additionally, on one important occasion she dressed up as a boy, foreshadowing her sexuality, she was also attracted to females. Bisexuality was not common during this time and neither was accepted. However, Frida didn't care. Along with this behavior, she went further and further...... middle of paper ......character. It was obvious that women had no place in this type of position because they were and are sometimes considered weak. However, she managed to escape the traps of the Web by working in a predominantly male profession. Interestingly, Tita's mother is the "head" of the house. Traditionally, men are the head of the household, although she was able to take this position because her husband had died. However, it is interesting to remember that his voice was the maximum power in the house. She imposed and enforced family traditions. It is important to remember this because tradition sometimes helps to keep an ideology alive. She believed that just as her family followed this tradition, it was her duty to do the same. I believe that sometimes women like her oppressed other women to submit to the society they lived in..
