Don Haskins, the coach in the film, provided his team with many opportunities to learn. During a recruiting trip, Don finds himself on the field with a future player. As they play a little one-on-one, Don easily stops the young player. He then teaches her the rocker step, a new skill. This was a learning situation in which the student was attempting to acquire a new skill. At this point, the athlete would be considered to be in the cognitive stage of learning, as their performance was still somewhat inconsistent and variable. Although the ongoing stages of learning are not shown in the film's workouts, the athlete later uses this skill in competition, suggesting that he has since mastered the new technique putting him at the self-reliant stage. There are many examples of how Coach Haskins has used this aspect of motor learning to help his team grow. Perhaps the first instance of punishment in the film occurred when some players were caught breaking team rules. They had traveled off campus at night to have a little fun in town, participating in activities they shouldn't have. Trust is an important aspect of any team sport, so when that trust was broken, coach Don Haskins was inclined to punish his players. However, he not only punished the guilty, but asked everyone to pay the price. Everyone ran sprints to start this workout for the disobedience of a few athletes. At first, the observer might be tempted to comment on the inequality of Coach Haskins' method. But this method of punishment reinforces the fact that they are a team and that what they do influences each other. Ultimately, this helped the team strengthen their friendship and camaraderie with each other. A punishment that resembles a game is most desired. In this case, there could have been a more game-like punishment, but speed and agility are also highly sought-after qualities in basketball. Running sprints in the wind helped the team be able to keep pace with their opponents and ultimately win. The benefits were especially evident in the final game against Coach Rupp and an experienced Kentucky team. Coach Haskins only played 7 players the entire game. These players were surely exhausted by the end but showed their stamina gained in part through their coach's punishment. This is a good example of punishment because it helped the team achieve their goal. Advanced Skill Traits The Texas Western Miners exhibited many advanced skill traits, including their natureinternal motivation. Before the start of the season, the coach told one of the players that he was out of the team. This player, Shed, was devastated. He exclaimed that he would never be able to look his father in the eyes again. The coach said he didn't care and hadn't earned the right to stay. Shed decided to go to the gym one last time and do some shooting. As he stood there, pretending to score game-winning baskets, he realized he had what it took to stay and play. His motivation for the game reached a level that evening that could not be diminished. The next day at practice, he showed up to demand that Don Haskins let him play. The coach decided to let him stay because of his determination and extremely high motivation to play basketball. In addition to the motivation of the Minors, they also demonstrated a great capacity to adapt. When they played in different venues, they had to put up with a lot of negativity from the opposing teams' fans. Additionally, each team they played against was different, with different strengths and weaknesses. One of the reasons this team was so successful was their ability to adapt to the opponents they faced. Individual Differences Perhaps the greatest lesson learned from this film is that individual differences, especially social differences, can be overcome to achieve greater heights. Unfortunately, at this time, many people in the South were still very supportive of racism. The miners experienced a lot of persecution and overcame a lot. Even school administrators and promoters at Texas Western were upset with Coach Haskins for recruiting so many players of color. When he started three black players, they really questioned his methods. However, administration proved to be the least of their problems as they progressed throughout the season. The team played well together and players learned to see the past more quickly than the rest of the community. On the road, some communities were less tolerant than others. At one arena, fans screamed, spat and threw food at players as they came out of the tunnel and onto the field. Certainly, this experience would have been terrifying for the team. But they remained united and became stronger. In another case, some community members were unable to put aside their social differences and beat one of the black players in the toilet, leaving him bruised and bloody. Unfortunately, many also believed that because the players were black, they had less intelligence and ability to perform under pressure. The Texas Western Miners proved them wrong by winning the NCAA championship. Three Things That Interfere with Performance First, personal issues can significantly impair an athlete's ability to perform. Harry was having a rough time at school and the coach was threatening to punish him if he didn't improve his grades. Eventually his mother showed up at the school and he quickly got back on track. But if he hadn't improved his grades, the team would surely have suffered from his laziness. One of the athletes struck up a relationship with a girl who may have changed his game slightly. The coach found them on the roof of the dorms one night and the athlete had to climb the stairs for a long time as punishment for breaking team rules. Injuries can also play a significant role in an individual's performance. Willie Cager, one of their big men, received a,.
