    by EM Forster Modernist writings have always been praised for their nuanced relationship with sexuality. This article examines the way in which EM Forster, one of the modernist writers on the fringes, treats discourses on sexuality differently from other great modernists, in the context of a socio-cultural environment extremely intolerant of homosexuality through his novel . Maurice, written in 1913-14 and published posthumously in 1971. To what extent does Forster's homosexuality and his novel about same-sex love negotiate with other gay writers and activists of the time? The simple fact that Maurice was published posthumously shows the grim situation of gay men and women of the time. Our work now is to examine the novel closely and situate its transgressions and liberation within the broader context of early 20th-century queer writing. In Mr. Bennet and Mrs. Brown (1924), Virginia Woolf observed: “…on or about 1910 the human character changed” (4). Starting from this classic definition of modernism, we can situate EM Forster's Maurice within the modernist canon. In fact, of his seven novels in total, four were already written before 1910. Unlike other modernist novels, Maurice does not experiment much with language, form, or style. However, its modernist philosophy lies in its transgressive nature – dealing with homosexual themes in the way that Oscar Wilde had anticipated modernism in the previous century. Michel Foucault in his essay “A Preface to Transgression” writes: “all modern thought is imbued with the necessity of thinking the unthought… for modern thought, no morality is possible” (quoted in Tambling 4).
