What would I like about being a guidance counselor? Every student needs help in one way or another, whether they are entering high school, need information, choose a career or talk about personal problems. As a senior scholar, I realize that guidance counselors play a big role in helping a student prepare for their future. School counselors play a big role in a student's life, with all kinds of issues, emotional and mental, and I would love to be a part of helping a student. This job interests me for two reasons. First of all, I love chatting with people of all types. Second, I'm always concerned about other people's feelings. The combination of these two qualities is what makes me think being a guidance counselor is right for me. They didn't always have advisors to guide you; they had to end the program during the great depression. It was only after many years that the guidance councils returned to the school budget. “Students lost their individual identity in the crowd of their peers” without advisors. More students were planning to go to college, but parents were unable to help their children in these areas. These and other services were to be provided by qualified individuals, guidance counselors. A school counselor plays multiple roles in a student's life. First and foremost, the advisor and student need to get to know each other so that the student feels comfortable. (Job Profiles, 2011) When a student enters their first year of high school, a counselor will be there throughout all four years of high school. school. The .seling program offers concentrations in marriage counseling, counseling school and community counseling and includes an internship. Doctoral students can pursue a Ph.D. in counselor training. Pennsylvania State University also offers the same educational privileges as William and Marry and students can also pursue a master's degree program in Elementary School Counseling, Secondary School Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Mental Health or in career. Finally, the University of Wisconsin offers a terminal Master of Science in Counseling program, which explores multicultural counseling, consultation, and professional behavior. It also offers a Ph.D. in the Counseling Psychology program. Additionally, the School of Education has a Counseling Psychology Training Clinic, which supports faculty research and offers psychology and mental health services to clients.
