The Columbian Exchange was a widespread exchange of animals, plants, human populations, diseases, technologies, and ideas between American and European civilizations. Politically, Europeans took control of the government from the Americans, making it more centralized, while European countries became competitive for access to land because they wanted resources and economic advantages. The Europeans established a system of mercantilism, core dependent systems and imported silver and gold from the Americas, leading to inflation. In the Americas, slavery and an encomienda system were implemented using natives and African Americans.
