Essay / Analysis of the film '12 Years A Slave' - 1062
The director managed to give us enough information to get an accurate representation of Christianity during this time period and to provide a literary aspect that could be analyzed. Direct Christian references are present as well as less obvious nuances. There are two times where we are introduced to people reading the Bible. When Ford read to his slaves, it was with good intentions. When Epps read to his slaves, he distorted the messages in order to subjugate his slaves. Through this we can see the negative consequences of illiteracy and how people can be exploited by religion. There was also the depiction of Patsey as a Christ-like figure. One last religious aspect I would like to address is that no other religions were present in the film. It is common knowledge that Christianity was imposed on slaves to replace their pagan beliefs. The absence of their ancient religion testifies loud and clear to the subjugation that was imposed on them.
