Farrington struggles to make the whole family understand why Cody keeps going to the hospital. Mrs. Farrington noticed in her children that they had different understandings and implications of Cody's condition. Thirteen-year-old Holly understands everything her mother knows about the disease. However, ten-year-old Heather doesn't ask many questions. They both understand that Cody must take certain enzymes every time he eats and that he must take vitamins. They also understand that when Cody catches a cold, it is taken very seriously and he may need to go to the hospital.
