    Visual artists are people who typically create art for visual perception in drawing, sculpture, graphic design, and painting, while authors are people who write novels, essays, and poems for reading and understanding. When it comes to comparing Romare Bearden and Alice Walker, Romare Bearden was born in Charlotte, North Carolina while Alice Walker was born in Eatonton, Georgia, both of whom were born in the South during the era of racial segregation in the South. They both moved to New York to pursue their careers, with Bearden moving to New York at a young age with her parents while Walker came to New York later in life to complete her education. Both Bearden and Walker were social workers in the New York metropolitan area while working on their arts and writings at night and on weekends. Additionally, their works were literally based on the lives of African Americans. Walker wrote about the lives and lives of African Americans as well as abuse in African American families, while Bearden painted about the living environment within African American communities. Both Walker and Bearden are civil rights activists. Walker, during her college year at Spelman College in 1962, was invited by Martin Luther King to his home and later participated in "The March on Washington" in 1963. During this time, Bearden organized and trained a group of artists called Artist Collective Group to support the 1963 civil rights movement led by Martin Luther King. Another similarity between Bearden and Walker is the inspiration they generated in their works from their travels outside the country.
