Essay / Literary Analysis of Hills Like White Elephants - 787
Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Miller Hemingway is one of his famous short stories. He introduced many autobiographical elements into the story, particularly his lifelong efforts in attempting to form meaningful relationships. The theme of the story is an ongoing conversation between two couples, each making the decision of their life. Hemingway reflects his struggle with depression and alcoholism in his story of these two couples, as well as how nature plays a role in people's lives and can contribute to important decisions in their lives. The story begins with the description of the hills across the valley and the surrounding nature, and continued with an endless conversation between an American man and a woman. Throughout the story, Hemingway portrays the man according to his rigid conception of masculinity, experienced, competent and always in control of himself in the face of difficult situations. Believing himself to be the more reasonable of the two, he supports the young girl by not giving her the sympathy and understanding she needs during the crisis. Uncompromising, he seems to identify more with the other passengers reasonably waiting at the station than with his own girlfriend at the end of the story, which suggests that the two will part ways. Throughout the story, the girl appears confused, helpless and indecisive, even though she was very defensive...... middle of paper ...... read this particular passage because the writer intended to keep the reader guessing. what was the topic, making the story more suspenseful. Although the story having an indeterminate ending might be unfavorable for some readers, for others it would give them the opportunity to construct the ending they want according to their desire. The story features a unique combination of an unborn newborn, alcohol, and unresolved issues between two couples. All of these aspects, in one way or another, go back to nature, to the nature of humanity in terms of disagreements and habits, and to nature. to create a new child. From here we can also see how Hemingway's writing style is different from other writers, in that the entire story is essentially a dialogue between two couples only and leaving the main problem of the 'unrevealed story, hidden in the current conversation..
