  • Essay / Child Abuse Case Study: Peter Connelly - 1525

Child abuse does not discriminate against a child because of their age, sex, religion or its socio-economic origin. Every child is vulnerable to abuse. Today's parents face the possibility that someone they know or a stranger could harm or take advantage of their children. Research indicates that up to one in four children will experience some form of abuse (National Child Abuse Statistics). Furthermore, one of the greatest ironies of child abuse is that the family, a child's primary source of care, love, and security, can also be a child's most provocative experience. This was the case for 17-month-old baby Peter Connelly. Throughout his short life, he suffered from neglect and physical abuse which ultimately caused his death. Child abuse is a serious problem that is taken too lightly. Peter Connelly was born on March 1, 2007 in Haringey, London. After two months, Peter's father left home, while his mother Tracey Connelly met a new guy, Steven Baker, at a club. On October 13, Peter was taken to the doctor with bruising on the side of his head. His mother told authorities he fell out of his crib. Around December, Peter's mother's boyfriend, thirty-two-year-old Steven Baker, moved into the house. The same month, he was rushed to the emergency room with head injuries, bruising to the bridge of his nose, sternum, right shoulder and buttocks. Peter's mother said he fell out of his seat. Ultimately, his case was referred to social services. Peter was temporarily placed in the care of a family friend. Pushing further, on January 26, Peter was returned to his mother, even though Tracey Connelly was still out on bail for assaulting and neglecting the baby.
